Three young men have been arrested and charged with arson following the burning down of thirteen houses at Mainoki village in the Paruparu area of the Panguna district in Central Bougainville.
The three men are now behind bars and are awaiting their court appearances. As revealed by the Central police commander Inspector Januarius Vosivai, the incident happened on January 12 this year. He said they had to make arrests three months later on the 4th of April because they had to compile all the statements of all the witnesses. The thirteen houses according to inspector Vosivai were burnt down in a family feud that started after a young man was suspected of incest with his cousin sister which turned out to be false. He said the girl’s family retaliated upon hearing the rumors and burnt down thirteen houses belonging to the young man’s family. He added firearms were also used when the feud broke out and men, women, children and ex-combatants at Panguna were involved also. Mr. Vosivai said investigations into this matter have all been completed and they will be making more arrests soon. He also pointed out that this was their first arrest in that area and the people of Paruparu were happy for their presence and have requested the police to do awareness in their area. Dawn FM
