The people of Manus Province have threatened to close the Manus Asylum Processing Centre if their demands are not met.
A peaceful protest march will be held on Friday to present their demands to the provincial government. This is to express their frustrations for missing out on economic and social benefits from the regional processing Centre. They feel they have been left in the dark for too long and want both the Papua New Guinean and Australian governments to address their demands. Spokesman of the forum, Ben Pokarup, says both governments must allow the people to have a say in the upcoming meeting scheduled for this week in Manus. They believe they have been deprived and have not benefitted from the agreement signed by the two governments. Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, announced last year that the asylum deal will be reviewed. There are issues relating to the agreement that the people want addressed and so want an open forum during this meeting. PNG Facts/EMTV Comments are closed.
