Statement by Hon Belden Namah We have just experienced an election that is the worst yet on record. Fifty eight years ago in 1964 when 1.3 million so called natives from the territories of Papua and New Guinea went to the First National General Election ever held in this land, they did it with more grace, with more control and with more dignity than we have shown in this 2022 National General Election. We have announced to the world by our actions in this election that we have regressed into savages and that those relatives of ours back in 1964 were far more civilized than we are today. We talk of tribal and regional politics while our nation lies in dire distress.
PNG is critically ill from a collection of sicknesses. It is sick: ● From economic stress inflicted by high debt, low finances, high unemployment and high inflation; ● From raging pandemics inflicted by Covid-19, Malaria, TB, and HIV/AIDS, and local epidemics like pneumonia, bronchitis, and cancer; ● From wounds inflicted by high crimes and low literacy ● From near paralysis of departments and national institutions that are suffering from rampant corruption, chronic nepotism, heavy politicization, and mismanagement. While our people suffer, we divide ourselves into coastal and highlands groupings. This is shameful after 47 years of Independence. These divisions go against the very basis of nationhood. No regional grouping must exist among us. We must only have groups in this country based on professional, sporting or political party affiliations. All regional groupings must disband and we must hear of them no more- That is because violence is not the exclusive trait of one grouping. Intelligence, goodness and evil is found in every regional grouping. Our people are not stupid. Let us not insult their intelligence by our petty bickering like children. We have wasted time enough. We have lost focus and direction enough. Our people have suffered enough. It is time for positive decisive action. It is time for change. The 1 Ith Parliament must Restore Normalcy in our nation. It must Instill Confidence in our people and our investors. Parliament must Guarantee Stability in our government and institutions of State. Parliament must set the direction and focus and ensure compliance. We do this as the Parliament of the State of Papua New Guinea. Not as a bunch of highlanders or coastals or Papuans or NGIs or Momases and or Highlands. I call upon all elected MPs to hear this and remember it: NOW IS THE PNG HOUR, NOT THE ME HOUR, the nation hour, not the tribe hour.
