A girl, now in her mid-teen had to endure abuse since she was six years old, at the hands of her parents, her maternal uncles and other male relatives.
"Many times I was sexually abused in the presence of my parents only to be told by them that I was born to expect it," she said. "Several times my mother stood there watching me being sexually abused by her brothers and cousins." One of the saddest things the victim revealed was that both her parents were university educated, and yet they had failed miserably to protect her. She said her uncles have friends in the police force and other law enforcement agencies in Lae. "I am facing a brick wall with the police; they are not helpful," she said. She said the matter was reported to the ward councillors and police but so far, no action had been taken against her parents and the perpetrators. Nothing had been done. She said just this week, she reported it yet again to police in Lae and signed a statutory declaration form to restrict her parents from seeing her. The victim said all those years, she copped blame after blame for anything that went wrong in the house and she had been asking this question: "Who are my biological parents?" She said last year, as a result of abuse, she became pregnant and bore a child. She could not complete her secondary education. "I will take my parents and their relatives to court for the abuse I received from them all these years of my life," she said. Comments are closed.
