The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) boycott of classes in protest over the prime minister’s actions has gone on for more than two weeks now, but a decision to continue with it or not will be made tomorrow. According to the Students Warden Mr. Samuel Banake, a referendum will be held to get the votes from registered students to either return to class or continue with the boycott until the prime minister receives their petition. This referendum is crucial because the UPNG Senate has already made its decision to cancel the academic year if the boycott continues until this Friday. "The referendum is organized by the SRC and if a two- third majority is reached tomorrow to return to class then classes will resume," he said. If students return to class they will have time to prepare for the first semester exam weeks that will start on the 30th of May. The voting will be conducted by the PNG Electoral Commission at the UPNG Forum Square and at the Medical Faculty at 3 Mile for the medical students. Meanwhile, the SRC Chief of Staff Mr. Hercules Palme Jim has also confirmed that the referendum will be held tomorrow.
