Strict rules for public motor vehicle operators and business houses vehicles in Lae have been laid down by the Morobe provincial land transport board to make roads safer .
The rules to be in force from this week include: PMV drivers and crews to wear clean uniforms; PMVs not roadworthy and old to be taken off the road; PMV buses must not be overloaded, forcing passengers to stand at the door, and crews to be seated; PMV buses must have clear route signs; and, No overcharging of bus fares. Board chairman and provincial minister for transport Waka Daimon, deputy chairman Joseph Mand and board member Joshua Mais who is manager of traffic registry as well, former assistant Police Commissioner Giosi Labi and Lae Met Supt Iven Lakatani announced the rules last Friday in Lae. Business houses are not allowed to: Use heavy semi-trailer trucks in the city to deliver cargo in containers; Use forklifts on city roads to unload cargo and containers from delivery trucks; and, Park on footpaths or non-designated roadsides. The board came up with the rules as the city prepares to host the Morobe Agricultural Show and the PNG Games. Daimon said the new guidelineswould benefit residents, road users and visitors. Lakatani said police would start its operation this week to enforce the rules.
