Social stigma, lack of vital information and lack of nurturing are among contributing factors that prevent youths from making better choices in life.
David Rupa, representative of the Youth Adolescents Health (YAH) club, said this at last week’s forum on the Adolescents Reproductive Sexual and Health held at the Parliament State Function Room Mr Rupa said the poor social indictors in this country include high rates of young people getting involved in risky sexual behavior because of being unaware of the consequences, and high rates of teenage pregnancies, where young girls not prepared to accept parenthood are likely to make desperate decisions that could risk their lives such as unsafe abortions. The forum was organised by the Papua New Guinea Parliamentary Group on Population and Sustainable Development, with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the purpose of further improving sexual and reproductive health rights and services for adolescents throughout the country. Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill attended the event, along with Minister for National Planning and Monitoring Charles Abel, Minister for Higher Education Malakai Tabar and few other MPs. Mr Rupa highlighted that an informed population of young people if mobilised could help in overcoming the country’s poor social indicators. These includes a high population of youth parents (20 – 29 years) whose children are also in the teen years, hence the doubling of youth between 13 – 29-year-olds. Others are violence against women, substance abuse, and lawlessness. These, he said, are symptoms of lack of opportunities, hence, the continuous cycle of poverty among these age categories.
