Southern Highlands Governor William Powi has called on the national government to prioritize funding for the Western Pacific University in Ialibu-Pangia. During a visit to the school on Wednesday with other Members of Parliament, Powi emphasized that the university is a national institution and not just for Southern Highlands or Ialibu-Pangia. Powi announced a personal commitment of K5 million towards the university’s development, while Mendi-Munihu MP also pledged an additional K500,000. Powi highlighted the importance of the institution, stating, “The Government must take heed of funding this institution. This is the pride of this country.” The Governor urged the Government to put aside political differences and focus on building the institution. He stressed the potential benefits of unity among Southern Highlands leaders, asserting that a collaborative approach could significantly impact the province's progress.
Powi acknowledged the dedication of the Ialibu-Pangia MPs towards the university’s construction, noting that while there is still much work to be done, he was impressed with the progress made so far. Chuave MP James Nomane addressed the students, emphasizing the transformative potential of their education. “The knowledge and experience you gain here can change the nation,” Nomane said, urging students to stay inspired and committed amidst the country’s economic challenges. Alternative Prime Minister Rainbo Paita encouraged students to strive for excellence and not be discouraged by obstacles. He emphasized the importance of developing solutions to challenges and highlighted that innovative ideas, which often originate in educational settings, play a crucial role in shaping the nation. Paita’s remarks underscored the value of education in addressing national issues, reinforcing the message that a commitment to learning and problem-solving can drive positive change in the country.
