Former PNG Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has been accused of pocketing US$784,000 meant for community colleges. The allegation was made during the trial of a couple jailed in Singapore for laundering US$3.6 million out of PNG. Singaporean Lim Ai Wah and her American husband Thomas Doehrman were overseeing a fund set up by the PNG Government to build the community colleges. The court was told that in 2010, they conspired to set up fake contracts that resulted in money being sent to a shell company in the British Virgin Islands. The couple told police that “bribes” had to be paid to Sir Michael “in order to get business from PNG”. The Straits Times reports that prosecutor Alan Loh says laundered money was traced to Sir Michael’s bank account in Singapore. That account has now been frozen. Lim and Doehrman intend to appeal. Comment is being sought from Sir Michael. Pasika.news Related News
