Senior Officer Investigated Over Gun Incident at Port Moresby Hotel

The Papua New Guinea Police are investigating a senior government officer accused of threatening security guards with a pistol at the Gateway Hotel in Port Moresby. The incident, which took place on Sunday, has raised questions about accountability and the rule of law.

Reports indicate that the altercation began when the officer attempted to enter the hotel without an access pass and was stopped by guards. The situation escalated when he allegedly drew a firearm and pointed it at the security staff.

Assistant Commissioner of Police and NCD/Central Commander Benjamin Turi said officers from the Seven-Mile Station acted promptly, taking the suspect into custody. However, he was later released following instructions from a senior officer at Police Headquarters, a decision Turi strongly criticised.

“The integrity of our police work was undermined by this directive,” Turi said. “We cannot afford to treat people differently because of their status. It sends the wrong message to the public and creates the impression of selective justice.”

Turi confirmed that Black Swan International, the security firm involved, is compiling CCTV footage and statements to support police action. He said the officer, a former soldier, will be called to the station to face formal charges.

Police investigations are continuing, with ACP Turi reiterating that everyone must be equal before the law, regardless of their position or background.
