A SENIOR police officer claims that he was attacked on Saturday afternoon by drunkards on the road in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands.
Assistant deputy police commissioner Teddy Tei, who is in charge of police in the Highlands region, said his vehicle was damaged and his daughter was injured from the stones thrown at the vehicle. Tei said a policewoman who was among the group that attacked him had been suspended from duty pending an investigation into her involvement. He said he was returning to Hagen from Kagamuga after a function with his family members and tribesmen in the vehicle when the incident happened. “I was driving toward the Baiyer bus stop in town to drop off my tribesmen when we come across drunkards fighting on the road,” Tei said. “When I stopped the vehicle and told them to get off the road, they attacked me.” Tei fired two warning shots into air to disperse the group and reported the matter at the police station. Members of the police task force went to the scene. Four people including the policewoman were brought to the station and later released on K200 bail each. Tei said police charged the four in connection with the stoning of the vehicle. On a report that police had shot one man at the scene, provincial police commander Chief Superintendent Martin Lakari said he had not received any brief on it. Comments are closed.
