Senior lawyer, Ben Lomai, is expected to appear before the Waigani Committal Court next week on the charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Mr Lomai was interviewed by police in Port Moresby yesterday and later arrested and charged with four counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice. The charges relate to two cases he filed in the National Court and one in the Supreme Court, on instructions from Madang Governor Peter Yama, in trying to stop the police from interviewing and arresting Mr Yama. Mr Lomai says the fourth count stems from an instance when he was on his way to Madang and was told before boarding that there were about 40 to 50 policemen outside to arrest Mr Yama. He says he went and told the policemen that he and Mr Yama had met with the Police Commissioner and established that the courts will deal with Mr Yama’s cases first before Mr Yama can go in for any interview. Mr Lomai was at the Committal Court with his lawyer David Dataona this morning but his name was not on the list of cases today because it was a fresh matter. Mr Lomai told reporters outside the court that he will see the police prosecutors at Boroko Police Station to secure a date for him to appear in court early next week. He’s advised them that he will be going to Madang later today on duty travel and will not be available until next Monday or Tuesday. He says he’s ready to fight the case in court and thanked police police for conducting the interview in a very professional manner and allowing him out on a K1,500 police bail. Meanwhile, Mr Lomai says many lawyers are concerned about properly representing the interest of their clients when police are continuing to harass and threaten to charge them. He says lawyers are mandated by the Lawyers Act to protect the constitutional rights and freedom of the people, both leaders and ordinary citizens, and should not be prevented from doing their jobs.
