Reckless driving continues to claim lives across Papua New Guinea, with three people killed instantly in a fatal traffic accident at Konedobu on Monday, November 10. Police Commissioner David Manning expressed serious concern over the growing number of deaths caused by careless motorists who ignore traffic laws and the safety of others. Commissioner Manning said CCTV footage of the latest accident showed clear evidence of negligence and reckless driving. The footage revealed a vehicle veering off the road, striking two pedestrians and killing a female passenger in the process. “It is all negligence and reckless driving,” he said, confirming that traffic officers are investigating the incident. According to police and media reports, more than ten people have lost their lives in traffic-related accidents nationwide over the past month alone. Commissioner Manning stressed that most accidents could have been prevented if drivers exercised more responsibility on the road.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab also confirmed the fatal Konedobu accident and reported that four other traffic incidents were recorded in Port Moresby on the same day. “This confirms that people are still driving recklessly around the city,” he said. Metsupt Simatab explained that despite ongoing police efforts, including arrests, convictions, and increased patrols, some motorists continue to ignore safety. “Our traffic officers are making arrests, people are being convicted, but we still have ignorant individuals who do not think about other road users and the people they carry,” he said. He added that police have intensified stop-and-search operations, roadblocks, and motorist patrols to promote safer driving habits. “When drivers see police, they tend to drive with care. But police cannot be everywhere — you must look after yourself, your passengers, and others on the road,” he said. Metsupt Simatab also urged families of the deceased to cooperate with police to help speed up investigations into the tragic incident. “We are doing everything possible to ensure justice for the victims,” he said.
