A LARGE group of prisoners fled from the jail in Mendi, Southern Highlands, on Saturday, a source says.
Details were unavailable yesterday but unconfirmed reports said between 40 to 80 prisoners escaped from Buiebi jail, near Mendi town. The jail command referred questions to the Correctional Services headquarters in Port Moresby. CS Commissioner Martin Balthasar could not be contacted for details. The Correctional Services has been hit by several major jail breaks this year, including the escape of jail robber William Kapris and two accomplices. Kapris and Raphael Walimini were later shot and killed by police. Buimo jail in Lae and Beon in Madang have had mass escapees, with most of the escapees still on the run. .
