Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill has given notice that tough legislation will be introduced to punish those making false claims against the State.
Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said this when responding to the K6.3 billion claims against the state from successful lawsuits dating back to 2003, when the claims managementsystem was established. "It is a serious concern where many of these cases are false and intended to rob the state and our people," he said. Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said the government is now looking at laws to penalise this kind of behaviour and also to stop court cases that are unnecessary and costly to the nation. He said the Attorney General has been advised to have the Department of Justice and Attorney General to look at the possibility of bringing to Parliament legislation that will discourage unnecessary claims that is costing the nation of valuable development kina. The comments from the Prime Minister came after it was revealed by the deputy Solicitor General Tauvasa Tanuvasa that claims against the state from successful lawsuits now stands at a record K6.3 billion. Addressing members of the legal fraternity at a court procedure workshop in Port Moresby, Mr Tanuvasa said there are currently 10,878 active claims against the state and it is likely to pay a total liability of K6.3 billion. There are also 5166 inactive claims bringing the total number of claims to 16,044. The average cost of each claim against the state is K393,000. Comments are closed.
