Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill is very determined to open up transport accessibility for the rural mass of Papua New Guineans, something past and successive governments have failed to deliver since the colonial and pre
independence era. Komo Margarima MP and Peoples’ National Congress (PNC) party man Francis Potape said this last ...Friday at the remote Margarima district of Hela province when commissioning and presenting 21 new vehicles purchased for the districts’ transport-roll-out programs. Mr Potape told more than 10 000 plus people who had gathered for the occasion that the current PM O’Neill led government is rural-driven and aims to open up road accessibility and transport infrastructures throughout the country in order for our rural population to access other government and civil services. Mr Potape said the people of this country have being denied of many basic services like good roads for more than 40 years now but since the government of O’Neill got into power, new roads are being built while throughout the four corners of PNG, development, rehabilitation and upgrading of existing roads are also taking place. Komo Margarima electorate is one of the biggest by far in land mass and population while geographically, bulk of its people live in places situated in some of the isolated and rugged terrains in Hela and the country. While parts of the Komo Margarima district have accessibility to good roads, more than 50% of his people still long for that good road and transportation services even to this day. Mr Potape only recently initiated the opening- up of the new Hulia to Beneria road project, linking some 20 000 people in the area who for the first time now are coming face to face with western civilization and the outside world via a good road link built through rugged terrains and vast jungles of mosquitoes infested- rain-forests. Mr Potape said with the new road link, the Beneria people are finding life easier and would no longer trek by foot including spending days and nights in the thick jungles to come to Tari for business, pleasure or medical reasons. With the good road link, people are now taking PMV bus rides through mountains and rivers that were few years ago, accessible by trekking via bush tracks. To the applause of the huge crowd, Mr Potape seized the opportunity to thank Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill for his commitment of K5 million this year for a new road to be built to link the secluded Mt Bosavi and Komo districts in Hela. “We have a Prime Minister who is rural-driven. “On behalf of Komo Margarima people, I thank Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill for giving us K5 million for the first phase of the construction of a new road from Mt Bosavi to Komo. “I can best assure you that as long as Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill is the Prime Minister of this country, more and more rural places and far-flung areas of PNG would see new road links developed, isolated armlets opened up, airports build, wharves and jetties constructed to make life easier for the ordinary Papua New Guineans where they can have good accessibility for all other service,” Mr Potape said. He said only when people have good road links and adequate transport services, their livelihood would improve. Mr Potape, who drove in with the new vehicles in a huge convoy from Tari to Margarima, presented the vehicles to Margarima Secondary school, Margarima rural hospital, police, law and order, district services, health centres and other LLG divisions in his electorate. Mr Potape also announced various road and other projects to be funded this year by his joint district budget planning and priority committee. The occasion was spiced up with several live gigs performed by Lae based music sensations, Lister and Amon Serum who rocked the parochial Margarima and Hela crowd late into the evening.
