The Prime Minister has welcomed Parliament's overwhelming support in passing the 2016 National Budget.
The 2016 National Budget was passed in the Parliament by 84 votes to 12. Peter O'Neill commended the Treasurer, Patrick Pruaitch for formulating the budget which will enable the government to work with available funds to continue growing the economy, and deliver services to the people despite a challenging global economy. He says the 2016 money plan will maintain focus and investment in key sectors such as growing of the economy, creating income and job opportunities and empowering people. Mr. O'Neill said the global commodity prices have fallen resulting in a slowdown in global economic growth, drought and frost brought on by severe El Nino, made worse by climate change is undermining food production. He said these pressures have the potential to undermine the country's Economic Development Agenda, however, the government must rise up to the challenge and deliver for the citizens of this country. He adds the government will not impose additional burden on the people by raising taxes, saying it would be irresponsible and unfair.
