Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has been urged to live up to his promises to Pacific Island countries when making financial commitments.
Opposition Leader Don Polye said this when speaking on the Prime Minister's pledge of 300 million Kina to Pacific Island countries, at the close of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Port Moresby last week. Mr. Polye said Peter O'Neil should not be misleading PNG's Pacific Island neighbours with rhetoric, but come out and tell them that the country is currently facing a cash flow problem and he cannot meet his commitments. He said, the Prime Minister has yet to provide relief funds for the frost and drought affected people in the country, but has seen fit to pledge a massive amount of assistance to the Pacific. Mr. Polye also adds that the government is making reckless commitments outside of its budgetary allocation or a foreign policy, and without a cabinet decision, and this is a dangerous trend for the country, which foreign governments should be wary of.
