Polygamy, or the act of marrying many wives, will soon be banned in P-N-G.Anecdotal evidence is that, polygamy is widely practiced in some areas, but all that will change as changes are being made to the Civil Registry Act.
The new laws also mean that all marriages in P-N-G will have to be registered in the future. Until now it was not necessary to register customary marriages. Registrar-General Dickson Kiragi told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program, the new law will not recognize polygamous marriages. "Recently, we have made some amendments to our civil registry act in which we have three types of marriage. On it, is customary marriage. And that customary marriage is only for Papua New Guineans only. And then we have civil marriages or religious marriages. But under the new amendments, the customary marriage is now be de-registrable.Unfortunately, the previous law,did not allow registration of customary marriages.Although the law recognizes customary marriage, unfortunately it was not registrable."
