Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill and Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will give the keynote addresses at the 30th Australia Papua New Guinea Business Forum and Trade Expo in Cairns, Australia.
The Prime Minister, the Australian Foreign Minister and the Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, will open the two-day conference in the north Queensland city of Cairns. Over 300 delegates from the Australian and PNG governments, private sector and civil society are confirmed to attend the summit which also includes a trade expo. The theme for the conference is "Papua New Guinea: Opportunities beyond the boom." The speakers will also include the Bank of PNG Governor Loi Bakani, ANZ (PNG) Ltd managing director Mark Baker and the PNG Investment Promotion Authority boss Ivan Pomaleu. A session this afternoon is dedicated to improving Papua New Guineans’ access to Australia, and will feature presentations by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship deputy secretary, Peter Vardos and the PNG chief immigration officer, Mataio Rabura. Tomorrow will feature a series of workshops focusing on Bougainville business opportunities and constraints, trade and investment from the Queensland perspective, building a national tourism industry and investing in infrastructure to spur economic growth. John Momis, the president of the autonomous Bougainville government, will give an insight on the autonomous region’s political landscape and Peter Taylor from Bougainville Copper Limited, will talk about the future options for the island’s resources. One of the presentations tomorrow will focus on the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and will be led by Donald Hehona, the Department of Treasury assistant secretary, who is the current chair of the working group. But a highlight for tomorrow should be a presentation by the resources sector’s Gerea Aopi (Chamber of Mines and Petroleum chair), Greg Anderson (PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum executive director) and Dan Lillig, the technical manager for Esso Highlands Limited, to give an update of the oil and gas operations. The PNG Task Force Sweep chair Sam Koim and the chairman for the PNG Chapter of Transparency International, Lawrence Stephen, will also give presentations zooming in on how fighting corruption can promote growth.
