Prime Minister Peter O' Neil officially opened the Aropa Airport, last Friday, 25 years after it's closure.
Once a very busy airport in Kieta, Central Bougainville, Aropa was closed down as a result of the Bougainville crisis. A high-powered government delegation lead by National Airport Corporation flew in this morning, on three different chartered inaugural flights from Port Moresby. Air Niugini, Airlines PNG and Travel Air (Mangi Lo Ples) all made their inaugural flights there. Hundreds gathered at the airport to welcome the inaugural flights, signalling the operation of Aropa Airport. As the planes descend into the Aropa Airport, there was an atmosphere of Jubilation, people filled with joy wove their Flags, singing and dancing, some even wept openly when they saw the planes. Peter ONeill was joined by Bougainville President, Chief Dr. John Momis and other leaders from the Region. The opening marks another milestone in the restoration of infrastructure and delivery of service to Bougainville. At the moment, the airport will only take in aircrafts the size of Dash 8 and Q400 or smaller. More work is done on the runway to allow larger aircrafts. Comments are closed.
