The Papua New Guinea Constitutional and Law Reform Commission will re-look the country's Constitution, to recommend for the country to adopt a federal system of government.
Secretary, Doctor Eric Kwa told a conference on the development of the Underlying Law in Port Moresby yesterday, that they have received a directive Reference from Prime Minister Peter O' Neil. However, they've sent it back, asking that it come through the appropriate channel. "We have now got the formal reference from the government. That we have been given 12 months to report back on what the people say about electing a prime minister directly. We need to go back to the cabinet and get it through the head of state because according to our law, its the head of state that issues conscious of directive. We cannot get it from individuals or individual ministers". The Prime Minister told Parliament during the September sitting, that his Government is considering scrapping the Westminster system of Government PNG has adopted, since independence, for the federal system. Former Prime Minister and New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan, who first raised the idea, earlier told Parliament that this system would be fair and representative for PNG with its more than 800 cultures. The CLRC has been directed to review twelve other laws, including those that are Constitutional and Organic, in the country. CLRC Secretary Doctor Kwa says, they have completed seven of their tasks and are working on the remaining five. Comments are closed.
