THE cost of road infrastructure developments and maintenance taking place in the nation’s capital now stands at more than K790 million. Government and city hall executives who took a tour of the major works in the capital yesterday revealed this cost and said they are satisfied with the progress of work so far with most of these projects. NCD Governor Powes Parkop early this year indicated that about K900 million worth of roadwork and related maintenance will take place in the city before the 2015 Pacific Games and the 2018 APEC Leaders Summit. The government inspection team, led by deputy Chief Secretary Trevor Meauri, toured the major road projects starting with the K160 million Kookaburra Street and fly-over and the K318 million Nine Mile to Hanuabada to Gerehu Road. The planned Motukea leg of the tour was cancelled but the same team will travel to Lae tomorrow to visit the Lae city roads, Lae wharf, Angau Hospital redevelopment project, Lae tidal basin development project and the Lae-Nadzab section of the Highlands Highway. The K160 million Kookaburra fly-over is 30 percent complete, according to New Zealand contractor, Hawkins. It said progress is slow due to nature but work is on track so far. Hawkins PNG country manager Seth Pardoe, construction manager Glen Kaukau and executive general manager Brian FitzGerald took the team on a tour and explained the status of the project to date. They are optimistic the project will be completed in time for the 2015 Pacific Games, which starts in July next year. Hawkins currently employs about 160 Papua New Guinean workers, both skilled and semi-skilled, and a number of managers from abroad. The workers have been deployed to all sections of the project. "Work has been progressing well and we are on target," Mr Pardoe said. We are now about 30 percent into our project but yes, we will complete the project before the Pacific Games commence." NCD city manager Leslie Alu and financial controller Augustine Ravi, who were also part of the team, said city hall is very busy with projects everywhere. Mr Ravi said the Nine Mile to Gerehu and Hanuabada road will cost K318 million, the Six-Seven Mile/Saraga Roads is worth K63 million, the Gordon industrial area roads are worth K83 million and the Nine Mile roads K77 million. "All these maintenance works are progressing very well and will be ready for use in time for the 2015 Pacific Games," Mr Ravi said. The Government team yesterday said they were satisfied with the work so far. PNG Facts/PostCourier Comments are closed.
