Three banana boats loaded with 72 betel nut bags and mustards were impounded at sea today between Papa Lea Lea and the Port Moresby harbor. Police Boat PPV Manning and PPV Duwang were deployed as part of police operations in support of the Covid 19 State of Emergency targeting the illegal trade of contraband such as drugs, firearms and smuggling of betel nut and mustards. The betel nut trade is considered to be one of the most high risk activity threatening the lives of people living in NCD and Central Province especially at this time when the Covid 19 pandemic is spreading across the world and threatening PNG as well.
Six of the suspects involved in this smuggling were detained by police. The Water Police Team will incinerate the contraband on land in the presence of the media tomorrow. Acting Director of Water Police Chief Inspector John Bana-koiri said the media will cover the event as part of their awareness aimed at discouraging people from smuggling betel lnut from Gulf and Central Province into NCD during the 14 days SOE period. CIP Bana-Koiri said the sea borne Operations will continue in support of the NCD Central Divisional Command operations.
