PORT MORESBY: The Opposition will not let the abuse of human rights and the denial of justice on the people go unchallenged. Opposition Leader Don Pomb Polye and his shadow Minister for Community Development Loujaya Kouza today (Wednesday) vowed to challenge the government on these issues and others when Parliament resumes on March 22. Ms Kouza said instances of gross human rights abuse by the government was appalling, adding she has called for the establishment of human rights commission in the country to deal with those. She was commenting on the killing of 12 escapees in the Buimo jail breakout and the denial of legal representation from the heads of National Fraud and Anti-Corruption directorate. Kouza has also called on her fellow MPs in the government ranks to support this to avoid what she said to evade ‘a path of determined dictatorship.’ Mr Polye said the justice for ‘our people’ and their rights have been marginalized. He has urged the judiciary and other law enforcement agencies to take note of it. “I am calling on them to help stop such abuses and promote quality justice and enforcement,” he said. Polye outlined fine examples of human rights abuse as LNG landowners, Aihi landowners and Baiyer Valley landowners among others. “I have learnt through them that their rights to land and resources have been deprived. “The Prime Minister and his government have only given them lip services and have been riding on their naivety,” he said. At a media conference in Port Moresby today (Wednesday) flanked by the Deputy Opposition Leader Sam Basil, Goilala MP William Samb and Kikori MP Mark Maipakai, Polye and Kouza were speaking to reporters. Meanwhile, The Opposition Leader has declined to comment on the reintroduction of the motion of No-Confidence against the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, saying he would do so at another forum soon.
