A total of K20 million was allocated for the upgrading of Madang town roads by the Government for last year and this year, but political infight with Madang leadership sabotaged the project, Prime Minister James Marape says. He called for unity and cooperation among politicians and key members of the bureaucracy to avoid the stalling of public investment projects. He was responding to persistent pleas by Madang Governor Peter Yama during question time in Parliament to visit his province to see the condition of Madang roads and allocate funding. Yama asked Marape when the road would be sealed. Madang MP Bryan Kramer interjected with a point of order but Speaker Job Pomat told Kramer not to respond on behalf of Marape. Marape continued saying the issue was not a lack of funding or the present Government’s failure to allocate funding but infighting between the leaders that had forced the matter to court leading to a stall.
“The problem is not the allocation of money,” Marape said. “We allocated K10 million last year, and K10 million this year, and next year, we are allocating K10 million until 2025. “Whatever we can distribute among all town roads, we try to distribute fairly. “For town roads, we are putting in K10 million each; for district town roads between K4 million and K5 million, so all roads across the country get something.” He said the allocations had been made for Madang town roads and interest for tenders advertised but infighting between the governor and the member had stalled this work. “Many times, in the contest between governor power-play and member power-play, these sort of projects are sabotaged and harmed,” Marape said. “I apologise to the people of Madang and do understand where the governor is coming from.” “Madang town roads remain our priority just like all town roads.” The National / PNGfacts next : Australia Open To Help PNG On Economy : Minister Comments are closed.
