The National Court has found police officer Jack Baria of Bogia in the Madang province involved in the killing of Moana Pisimi on New Year’s Day at Back road guilty of murder this morning.
Judge Frazer Pitpit handed down the decision at the national court house today with the sentencing scheduled to take place on the 2nd of November. Meanwhile, the deceased husband Mr Thomas Pisimi expressed satisfaction for the court’s decision saying, may this incident be a reminder to our disciplinary forces that no-one is above the law and such act is not acceptable. Pisimi added, it is now 9 months since the shooting of late Moana, which has caused tensions amongst the deceased family members and it is pleasing that finally justice has been served. He added Police brutality is a big issue in PNG and most of the time police officers get away with it as many of our people are illiterate and do not know what to do. While commending the majority of the hard working policemen says police are here to respect the public and not to act above the law. Pisimi says only a number of police officers are going against their rules of engagement.
