Police in PNG have arrested and charged two suspects and are searching for three more people, including two expatriates, over the murder of Iranian asylum seeker Reza Barati on Manus Island, ABC News reports.
Mr Barati, 23, died from severe head trauma during a riot inside the Australian-run regional processing centre on Manus Island on February 17. PNG police said Joshua Kaluvia was arrested on Monday in West New Britain Province. It is understood he is a former Salvation Army worker. Another man, Louie Efi, believed to be a former employee of security firm G4S - which managed security at the detention centre at the time of the violence - was arrested in July on Manus Island. They have both been charged with murder. PNG's deputy commissioner of operations Jim Andrews said police are looking for one more Papua New Guinean and two expatriates. "There are five suspects: two expatriates and three locals," he said. He could not confirm the nationality of the two expatriate suspects, but most foreign workers there at the time were Australian.Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has welcomed the news but said the PNG government was yet to confirm it.
