The people of West Papua are entitle to basic human rights governed by international laws and every country is obliged to support and raise concerns when such rights are violated according to Solomon Island Prime Minister and Chairman of MSG Manasseh Sogavare He said PNG’s role in advocating for a free West Papua to break away from Indonesia is taken with caution because it is a transnational issue. MSG has taken a clear stance making sure it does not undermine Indonesia’s sovereignty. He said matters pertaining to the decolonisation of West Papua must be discussed decisively with Indonesia because Indonesia is also an associate member of MSG and its continual membership will be considered by member states. He added that it is the MSG’s intention to bring West Papua and Indonesia together to discuss this issue and find a workable approach. MSG will continue to have dialogues with Indonesia. Following a question raised as to whether PNG should have an active role in advocating for a free West Papua or not? He stated that parties have different views and that must be taken into consideration. However issues of human rights violation must continually be discussed and it will be of benefit to Indonesia.
