PNG Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas has urged provincial governments to avoid launching their own evacuation operations for University of Goroka students, saying such actions could undermine established procedures as tensions remain high following clashes between students and nearby communities over the weekend. Sir Peter acknowledged that concerns for student welfare are valid, but stressed that UOG is a national institution governed by its own structures that must guide any formal response. He said provincial leaders must wait for direction from the university’s Senate before stepping in. He noted that the Eastern Highlands Provincial Government, as the host province, should work with UOG’s administration to stabilise the situation and coordinate any decisions regarding movement of students.
Sir Peter also welcomed the arrival of Higher Education Minister Kinoka Feo in Goroka, saying his involvement provides the appropriate level of authority to handle operational matters at the institution. He cautioned provincial leaders not to rely on unverified information circulating online, adding that unsanctioned evacuations could worsen an already tense environment. UOG remains closed indefinitely as provinces continue arranging travel for their students through approved channels. “I’m encouraged that the Minister is on the ground, he’s the right person to make that call,” he said.
