Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika says the lack of medical facilities in the country is an issue that the State needs to address. In a Ceremonial Sitting of the Court to honour and farewell Late Justice Tamate yesterday, Sir Gibbs stated that he is compelled to say such implications can raise Human Rights issues in most medical care cases. The Chief Justice stated that our people must know that medical treatment is a human rights issue and if they think and believe that no proper treatment was given, they are entitled to have their grievances heard Sir Gibbs says the medical equipment in our public health hospitals and clinics need to be the best to cater for the health of our people. Sir Gibbs says our people must know that they have the right to demand the best in medical care in the world today, and their demands must be met by the Government.
He says proper medical care is the primary responsibility of the Government. Sir Gibbs says in any country in the world, the public hospitals are the ones which should be well equipped with all modern up to date state of the art medical equipment and not the private hospitals. Amongst the matters of concern raised, is to put a stop to all government doctors especially at the Port Moresby General Hospital from working at private clinics, by improving their salaries. The Chief Justice last month also raised similar concerns in relations to Late Justice Nicholas Kirriwom's death at a private hospital in Port Moresby.
