The PNG Electoral Commission is on a drive to enforce control measures toward reducing huge numbers of election petitions after every national election. Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai in a statement says the commission will work with the Attorney General and police to implement court orders on losing candidates in election petitions. This comes as candidates who have lost their election petitions and awarded costs are not adhering to court orders.
Mr. Sinai says he'd like to see the Attorney General and the Courts review qualification rights for election petitions so that losing candidates intending to file a petition is competent enough to take up proceedings in court. The EC Commissioner further says, with the assistance of the courts, the Orders on record must be validated and listed as election offenses so those who fail to comply with set rules will be penalised with the ' rule of convicts', and not allowed to nominate in future elections.
