PNG Tourism Minister Condemns Attack on Australian Tourists in Rabaul

​PNG Tourism Minister Belden Namah has condemned a recent attack on an Australian mother and her teenage daughter aboard the Pacific Encounter cruise ship while docked in Rabaul, East New Britain, last month.

The family was traveling with Carnival Australia, where an assailant attempted to rob them, leaving one of the victims with a stab wound to the hand. Namah learned of the incident through a report from the cruise line operator, Carnival Australia, which has since raised concerns about passenger safety in Papua New Guinea.

Expressing disappointment, Namah emphasized that such acts do not reflect the spirit of PNG’s hospitality. He extended apologies to the affected family and to Carnival Australia, stating, “We regret the distress caused and are committed to preventing similar occurrences.”

Namah assured the public that his ministry is working closely with law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice, reinforcing that visitor safety is a priority. He stressed that the incident has prompted immediate action, with a focus on supporting and protecting all tourists.

In response, Namah outlined plans to enhance safety for travelers, which include working with cruise operators to form a task force for rapid on-site assistance. Additionally, the Tourism Ambassador programme is being strengthened to provide liaisons at local attractions, markets, and parks, ensuring tourists have access to support and guidance when needed.
