Trade, Commerce and Industry Minister Richard Maru, says PNG needs to grow its own food, and stop importing things from overseas.
Minister Maru says imported food-stuff include beef where PNG imports 50-percent of the annual requirements, milk and many dairy products, rice, fruits and vegetables and many more. Mr. Maru is urging PNG to find new trading partners who will assist it produce food products locally. He says PNG must take advantage of the Asian Century, and encouraged Asian businesses to invest in PNG, especially in investments that will replace imports like rice, beef, vegetables and furniture. The Minister further says there is urgent need to negotiate and enter into new trade and investment agreements with Indonesia, Philipines, China and Malaysia. Mr. Maru says apart from Asian region, PNG needs to deepen its trade and investment relationship with the European Union. An Interim Economic Partnership Agreement with the E-U has given PNG special duty free market access to date, for fisheries and oil palm. Pac News Comments are closed.
