Papua New Guinea will ask Australia's Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, to extradite three Australians who worked at the Manus Island immigration detention center so they can face rape allegations.
The A-A-P reports, Mr Abbott will only be attending the Pacific Islands Forum leaders retreat tomorrow. Prime Minister O'Neill told reporters at Parliament House today, the rule of law must prevail. Mr O'Neill says, the three must face up to the allegations and be tried under PNG's rule of law. Three guards employed by Wilson Security were stood down and returned to Australia following an incident in mid-July, where they allegedly tried to sexually assault a local woman. Mr O'Neill also expressed his general frustration with Australian expatriates evading PNG's justice system with quick evacuations - citing the case of two Australian guards involved in a drink-driving car crash on Manus a fortnight ago. Meanwhile, he says good progress is being made on resettlement arrangements for refugees on Manus, anticipating a proper resettlement before the end of the year. By: PACNEWS/AAP
