The Government of Papua New Guinea has formally released the 5G mobile spectrum, marking what Acting Information and Communications Technology Minister, Hon. Peter Tsiamalili Jnr, described as a significant breakthrough in the nation’s digital transformation agenda. Minister Tsiamalili said yesterday that this was the first time in PNG’s history that radio spectrum would be allocated through a competitive, market-based approach. He said the decision highlights the Marape-Rosso Government’s determination to modernize ICT infrastructure in line with international best practice. The spectrum release involves the 2600 MHz band, which the minister said will be used to roll out 5G services across the country. He explained that the technology will open opportunities for innovation, attract investment, and enable inclusive economic participation.
He also emphasized that access to fast and secure Internet services is vital for PNG’s progress. The 5G rollout is expected to boost government digital services, support private businesses, and improve essential sectors such as education and healthcare. The Acting Minister commended NICTA for spearheading the process and conducting extensive stakeholder consultations prior to the release. He said their leadership was critical to ensuring that the allocation was transparent and fair. The announcement comes after NICTA’s Board endorsed the decision in July 2025. Minister Tsiamalili said the development is crucial for the expansion of mobile broadband and will pave the way for the use of next-generation technologies in PNG. Also read
