PNG celebrated the 39th Remembrance Day Celebration at Ela beach Remembrance Park entwined the historical bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in World War II on Papua New Guinean soil.
Governor General Sir Michael Ogio said that seventy years ago, on this day, men of Papua Infantry Battalion fired the first shots in defence of our land and its people. Sir Michael said that it was the first time natives from different tribes of the territory of Papua New Guinea had engaged in collective armed action against a common enemy. He said that as we gather, in remembrance of their role and that of our friends from Australia, New Zealand, and the United, in this great battle, let us pause to remember their sacrifice. We remember the heroic men that fell in battle as well as those that made it home to their loved ones. May we never forget them? Sir Michael said that war is a terrible thing, and we thankfully are spared the tragedy of battle today because of these honorable men. “We have a vibrant country, with wonderful friends and have made peace with those who once stood against us, because of the valiant sacrifice of these men.
