Twelve political parties from the current 45 registered ones in P-N-G, have been axed.
Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission, Andrew Trawen made the announcement, during the close of the first Learning and Development workshop in Port Moresby, last Friday. He however, did not name the parties, only saying that they will be revealed soon, once they respond to the decision. 36 of the 45 registered parties received notices of de-registration. The Candidates Commission then adopted recommendations to cancel 12 political parties. Seven others have been given seven-days to present proper responses. According to Mr. Trawen, this is the first time since the enactment of the Organic Law that the country has had a large number of parties issued with notices. Not only that, many of these parties have members in Parliament. Trawen has blamed party executives for not doing their job. The Candidates Commission has re-issued warning's that it will NOT tolerate political parties breaching the provisions of the Organic Law. Mr. Trawen was speaking during the close of the first Learning and Development workshop in Port Moresby last Friday.
