POLICE have arrested an MP for allegedly using a sorcerer to help him win an election.
Salio Waipo won the Angoram by-election late last year following the death of Ludwick Schulze. Schulze had won the seat from Arthur Somare in the 2012 general election. Waipo was arrested by a team of detectives from Port Moresby who were in Wewak to investigate other matters. He was charged with one count of allegedly aiding and abetting a sorcerer under the Sorcerer Amended Act of 1978. Police alleged that Waipo’s campaign manger Lucas Asnai and a driver travelled from Angoram to Wewak to pick up Mailon Kenya, 36, from Zerikin village in Bogia, Madang, during the counting. Kenya was jailed by the Wewak Magistrates Court for one year after admitting that he was in possession of items related to sorcery in Wewak. He had earlier admitted to police that he was in Angoram to assist Waipo and a local level government president win their elections. Police said they found four pig tusks, two small bottles of oil, human hair, three pieces of tree bark and lime on Kenya. Following his sentencing, losing candidates told police that they believed Kenya played a major role in Waipo’s win. Waipo is out on a police bail of K1,000. He will appear before the Wewak District Court for mention. PNG Facts/The national Comments are closed.
