The Amendments to the Citizenship Law was among other Bills passed in Parliament yesterday.
The Citizenship Act of 2013 will allow P-N-G to allow dual citizenship. The Bill had the overwhelming support of two-thirds majority votes of 90 to nil. It also attracted a good debate before its passing. The passing of the bill now paves way for PNG to easily deal with issues on dual citizenship. It means government agencies such as Immigration and Citizenship Services can now have a proper policy in place to process foreigners who wish to have dual citizenship, but with careful screening. Acting minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration Kerenga Kua when presenting the bill says the idea of introducing dual citizenship was considered long time, however timing was not right until present. He says today' atmosphere and circumstance is right to create systems and procedures to deal with the issue. Concerns on whether the change will open flood gate allowing foreigners to come in unnecessarily, Mr Kua clarifies that this will not be the case, as the new system will allow dual citizenship on a reciprocal basis only.
