The Papua New Guinea Parliament has passed Dual Citizenship Bill that aims to bring back many skilled Papua New Guineans to develop this country, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says. “Parliament today put forward the issue of dual citizenship, which has been outstanding for a while. “Our law was not able to accommodate it as their birth right to be citizens of our country,” O’Neill told a media conference. “It was a unanimous support of Parliament and you can see that our Parliament is thinking the same way, it is the demand of the people and we have listened to them. “Today, we have passed the dual citizenship so we look forward to engaging with many of our people. Many of our relatives who have gone overseas and studied and because privileges are better, they stayed out of the country. “It’s not because they want to surrender their passports and their citizenship.” O’Neill said people holding dual citizenship could not run for public office. “If you want to run for public office like Member of Parliament, councillor or provincial government member, you must be 100 per cent PNG citizen.”
