The Opposition Leader has welcomed interventions by Ombudsman Commission stopping the Government's over 3-billion Kina loan from the
Swiss Global Financing Services Bank, from progressing any further. While the Commission has issued directive to freeze the loan, Belden Namah's lawyers are working around the clock to challenge the constitutionality and legality of the entire loan. Namah said it is pleasing to see the Commission taking a stand on the issue. Issuing directives under Section 27-4 of the Constitution, the Commission said, while it does not want to interfere with any development initiatives, it wants to find out if the Government had followed the law to get the loan. Chief Ombudsman Rigo Lua also said, while it is not asserting any irregularities in the loan arrangement, the investigation is to make sure the integrity of leaders involved in the loan is protected. Meantime, Deputy East New Britain Governor Herman Yareng, wants the Task Force Sweep to be involved in investigating the Government's loan into the UBS bank. Mr. Yareng claims that because the loan was rushed, it will increase debt levels, and mortgage PNG's future generations. He further claimed that past allegations of corruption by senior public servants and members of the Government have been swept under the carpet when the government is selective in fighting corruption.
