THE PNG government has appointed a second honorary consul in Berlin, Germany, as part of its strategy to connect with key economic partners.
Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Rimbink Pato said in a statement that Germany had a historical relationship with Papua New Guinea and there was growing trade and investment interest between the two countries. He said the role of the two consular offices in Germany and the PNG Embassy in Brussels was important in representing and promoting the renewed relationship. Pato made the remarks during the commissioning of Thomas Bockhold as Honorary Consul in Berlin last Wednesday. PNG already has a consular office in Hamburg, represented by Horst Hoertelmann. He said Germany was one of PNG’s largest trading partners in Europe. “Germany largely imports minerals and agriculture products like copper, processed fish, coffee and cocoa while it exports machinery, equipment and pharmaceutical products to Papua New Guinea,” he said. “A few German companies and individuals have invested in PNG and are contributing to the growth of the nation. “PNG has an open economy with a liberal investment regime that welcomes and facilitates foreign direct investment. “The country is richly endowed with vast untapped natural resources in minerals, hydrocarbon, forestry, fisheries, agriculture and has a rich culture.” PNG Facts / The National Comments are closed.
