A private internal audit firm has been appointed by the PNG Law Society to inspect the trust account of Young and Williams Law firm. PNG Law Society President Peter Kuman confirmed this in a media statement. Goroka MP Bire Kimisopa recently questioned the progress of investigation by the Society demanding its outcome be made known publicly. Mr Kuman said KPMG will investigate money laundering claims made public by senior partners and principles of Young and Williams Law firm, Greg Shepard and Harvey Maladina. The two were secretly filmed in a video describing how law firms in PNG can be used to launder or transfer millions of kina into Australia without a trace. The video made headlines in Australia and PNG with a public outcry to investigate the two and hold them responsible for their words. Kuman said now that the appointment has been made, KPMG will carry out investigation and provide a report within 3 months based on the terms of reference. Investigations are also being carried out by the Lawyers Statutory Committee. He confirmed the matter was part heard and is continueing with the LSC and will advice of its outcome. Its understood Shepard and Maladina have provided responses to the allegations leveled against them.
