Papua New Guinea lacks the required capacity to protect itself from the deadly global outbreak of ebola, which has already claimed more 3, 800 lives in West Africa.
This concern was raised by Health Secretary Pascoe Kase this afternoon at the Port Moresby General Hospital. The outbreak has already entered the United States and Spain. One of our closest neighbours, Australia, is experiencing its first negatively tested case of Ebola, but concerns remain on how PNG will handle the deadly virus. Meanwhile, Secretary Kase confirmed that precautionary plans are underway to combat ebola in Papua New Guinea, particularly at the Jacksons International Airport – the country’s threshold to world. Although it hasn’t reached our shores yet, the common symptoms of ebola show up in 2 to 21 days after infection and usually include: high fever, headaches, joint and muscle aches, sore throat, weakness, stomach pain and lack of appetite. While much has been said about how it can kill humans, the main modes of transmission must be clarified for public knowledge. The virus, which initially started in West Africa, has already entered other countries such as the US and Spain. When asked about how PNG plans on tackling the global outbreak of ebola, Health Secretary Pascoe Kase confirmed that PNG lacks the capacity, but talks are on-going and procedures are in place to mitigate the effects of ebola in PNG. Ebola has already claimed more than 3, 800 lives in West Africa and its movement is slowly spreading to other parts of the world. This morning, PNG’s closest neighbour Australia came under the microscope; although a case was tested negative quarantine and surveillance measures have been taken to monitor the apparent symptoms. The fact that PNG lacks the capacity to deal with a prospective ebola outbreak is a serious concern of national security. PNGfacts/EMTV Related stories
