The Papua New Guinea Government plans to use the upcoming World Expo in Japan to promote the country as a prime investment destination in the Pacific. International Trade and Investment Minister Richard Maru emphasized that PNG’s participation in the Expo presents an opportunity to initiate discussions on a formal bilateral trade agreement with Japan after 50 years of diplomatic relations. Speaking in Port Moresby, Minister Maru highlighted the need for PNG to capitalize on this occasion to market itself and explore a potential trade agreement with Japan. He noted that despite five decades of partnership, no formal trade discussions have taken place, and the World Expo in Osaka provides a unique platform to strengthen trade relations. The government has committed K3 million as initial funding to secure a commercial space outside the Expo site for showcasing PNG’s products and services. Acting Secretary of the Department of International Trade and Investment, Jacinta Manua, believes that the Expo will help diversify PNG’s exports to Japan beyond its traditional resource-based products.
Currently, PNG enjoys a trade surplus with Japan, with total trade reaching nearly K14.8 million in 2022. PNG’s major exports include LNG, petroleum, and copper. However, Mrs. Manua expressed hope that the Expo will change Japan’s perception of PNG, allowing the country to showcase other products such as coffee and vanilla. Ambassador Gabriel Dusava has been appointed to lead the government’s efforts for the Expo. The National Expo Commissioner General revealed that stakeholder consultations have already begun, with over 35 private sector agencies and provincial representatives involved in the process. According to the Osaka Expo 2025 website, the event is expected to attract 28.2 million visitors between April 14 and October 13, providing PNG with a significant global audience.
