After years of torment and pain Bougainvillean’s can now have a direct say in the Bougainville copper mine after the PM announced today that 17.4 percent or 69 Million Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) shares will be transferred to the landowners and people of Bougainville.
“This is the right thing to do and the Government is aware of the years of pain and conflict that the people have endured,” said PM Peter O’neill in announcing the transfer in Parliament today. This now means the people of Bougainville will now own a combined shareholding of 53.8 percent of BCL the government will now hold talks with landowners and the ABG Government on how these shares will be distributed.
