Papua New Guinea internet users are now facing tighter online restrictions as telecommunication companies and internet service providers begin blocking pornographic and unlawful websites across the country. The action follows a Government directive aimed at cleaning up online content and protecting young people from harmful material. Acting Minister for Information and Communications Technology Peter Tsiamalili Jr. said Starlink had already enforced the new measures. “Starlink has effectively complied, with the blocking of unsuitable websites, including pornography, taking effect as of today,” he said. Mr Tsiamalili said the internet should be used for education, business and communication instead of spreading harmful content. “This action is necessary to protect our children, families, schools and communities from harmful online content,” he stated. He warned that under Papua New Guinea law, pornography is not treated lightly. The Cybercrime Code Act 2016 carries penalties including fines and imprisonment for people involved in producing, distributing or accessing pornographic material for publication or transmission. The Minister also reminded the public that the Classification of Publication (Censorship) Act 1989 bans objectionable publications considered offensive to accepted moral standards. People using social media, messaging apps and online platforms to circulate pornographic material have been warned they could face legal action. “Any material involving children is a serious criminal offence and will be dealt with under the full force of the law,” Mr Tsiamalili cautioned. The Government said monitoring of telecommunication companies, ISPs and Starlink would continue, while new social media legislation is expected to be introduced before the end of next year. Headlines
