The Government has declared a public health emergency in the Western Province, to address the escalating Tuberculosis cases there.
The National Executive Council met today (Thursday, 23, April ) and endorsed the submission from Health Minister, Michael Malabag, for the Emergency TB Response plan. It's approved 17.7-million Kina to implement the plan, with an initial 9.7-million Kina to be released immediately. Western Province has 234 drug-resistant cases - the highest in the country as of December 2014. Apart from the treatment being expensive and funding not being enough, the Daru General Hospital is faced with an acute shortage of doctors and nurses. All these issues will be addressed under the Emergency TB Response Plan, over a 12 month period. A senior national medical officer, Dr Ninkama Moiya, will be the Emergency Response Coordinator.
