Deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion today (6/05/14) announced the Papua New Guinean Government’s commitment of US$50,000 to assist in implementing the three phases of the new Framework for Pacific Regionalism.
He made this announcement during the Special Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Retreat at the Muri Beach Club Resort this morning. The main purpose of the meeting was for the Leaders to consider and endorse the final outcomes of the Pacific Plan Review that was finalized by an Eminent Persons Group (EPG), headed by a former PNG Prime Minister, Sir Mekere Morauta. At the meeting the leaders resolved to endorse the 36 recommendations of the Review, which would chart the way for the proposed Framework. Under previous arrangements entailed in the Pacific Plan, the general consensus was that it was not effectively delivering PIF Leaders’ decisions for economic growth, sustainable development, good governance and security. The 36 Recommendations will be presented for final endorsement at the forthcoming PIF proper in Palau in August this year. He also informed the Leaders’ Retreat of PNG’s K10 million commitment to establish a Small Islands States (SIS) House in Port Moresby to ensure they have a more coordinated approach to the development initiatives of the SIS.
